The Scoop on Real ID - Now Fully Enforced

The REAL ID requirement has been years in the making. The REAL ID Act was passed by Congress in 2005 following recommendations from the 9/11 Commission, establishing federal security standards for state-issued driver’s licenses and identification cards. Since then, travelers have had nearly two decades to comply, with multiple deadline extensions granted to give states and the public time to prepare. Full enforcement is now in place, meaning a REAL ID or passport is required for domestic air travel.

Beginning February 1, 2026, the Transportation Security Administration introduced a temporary alternative for travelers without acceptable ID: a $45 fee to use TSA’s ConfirmID system, which allows identity verification for a 10-day travel window. While this option exists, obtaining a REAL ID remains the simplest and most cost-effective way to avoid delays at the airport.
